On 27 September 2018, the Excellence Commission announced the decision on the newly funded clusters within the framework of the Excellence Strategy. The Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed) is a research cluster that has already been funded for one funding period within the previous Excellence Initiative and it looks back on many scientific successes from 2012-2018. cfaed has also played a decisive role in strengthening the attractiveness of the location for the local electronics industry and for new developments. With a newly adjusted research program, cfaed planned to build on these results in a second funding period and to follow up on many of the first successes, to lead to further breakthroughs and to link up with the newly added research fields of the program.

That was over way too fast: Last Friday, the 2018 cfaed Summer School Dresden Microelectronics Academy concluded with three talks and a wrap up by the chairs, Prof. Bartha and Prof. Mannsfeld. For five days, together with Globalfoundries, X-Fab, and Infineon cfaed once again presented Dresden’s synergetic semiconductor research and industry communities. We welcomed over 20 students and scientists from 14 nations in Dresden to the 17th edition of the prestigious academy. The DMA attracts participants who are fascinated by the latest innovations in the semiconductor industry and want to gain practical first-hand and expert knowledge. Top lecturers familiarized them with the fascinating world of semiconductors. Guided tours with industry professionals offered a deep insight into some of the most compelling work environments for leading engineers.
